Interpretation

Interpretation is another thing both jazz musicians and psychoanalyts do. In this gallery I include three vocal duets and two orchestrated pieces that show how singers and instrumentalists treat standard songs and classical themes.

The vocalists I selected are popular interpreters of what we call standard songs. Listen to how Ella and Louis treat Summertime – from Gershwin’s opera. Ray Charles and Betty Carter express the longing and sadness when lovers leave each other, and Lady GaGa and Tony Bennett show you visually how moved they are by each other and the song. We must also pay tribute to the song writers and composers who touch our heartstrings.

“Concerto” and “Lament” are based on classical themes – and the treatments are interpretations that do them justice. In analysis we try to respond to our patients both with our silence and our words using creativity and sensitivity as these jazz musicians do.
